As we entered 2026, Defensa Animal is witnessing, for the first time since our founding in 2013, a significant increase in dog and cat rescue organizations across Puerto Rico. In contrast, resources for horses remain critically insufficient, despite an equine population numbering in the hundreds of thousands and widely believed to approach one million.
In response to this growing gap—and in recognition of Puerto Rico’s deep cultural connection to horses—we are placing greater focus on equine welfare. While we will continue to assist other animals whenever possible, our focus will be directed toward horses, where the need remains greatest and support is most limited.
As conditions evolve, we will continue to adapt in order to best serve the animals of Puerto Rico, while upholding the highest standards as a GuideStar Platinum and GreatNonprofits Top-Rated organization.
